Cooking with Kids: Building Confidence One Recipe at a Time
Behind the Scenes of a Homeschooling Teen- What did Stephen cook? These will be any cooking creations that Stephen, my son and co-creator makes: young chef recipes he has either created himself, followed one of our recipes, or someone else’s recipe, but mostly his own, as that is his current favourite way to cook.
Stephen and I have been cooking together since he was 3, and now he’s the one who creates these amazing recipes and dishes. 😯🤩
Cooking is more than just a way to feed ourselves — it’s a skill that fosters independence, creativity, and responsibility. When kids learn to cook, they gain a sense of accomplishment and build confidence in their abilities. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to introduce them to healthy eating habits and expand their palate.
Cooking Is More Than Just Food
Cooking teaches responsibility, creativity, and self-sufficiency. Plus, it’s an incredible way to bond as a family. When your kids learn how to cook, they gain independence, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for what goes into creating a meal
My meals tend to be more functional; Stephen’s are a creative powerhouse! So I came up with this idea of sharing what he’s cooking as inspiration and fun for everyone, but especially other children and teens looking for cooking confidence. Also, our family and friends are often asking us to share this information, so we thought maybe you, our readers, would be interested too in these kids in the kitchen ideas.
Please follow along as we document what he’s cooking next 🧑🏼🍳
These are not meant to be curated and picture-perfect photos; they are meant to be everyday real photos taken by either myself or Stephen. They are meant to be inspirational and not intimidating, ideas of what you and your children might want to cook together. Some might end up in future recipes in our printables.
So, without further ado, Stephen’s first culinary creation is French toast. He makes this every few months, but we all love it. This dish was made using sourdough bread, so it got a bit darker, but it wasn’t burnt at all. Easy to do and made as part of our homeschooling morning.

Below is a very tasty breakfast that Stephen cooked for his Dad. My husband loves eggs, and most mornings that’s what one of us makes for him. These scrambled eggs and rice were extra tasty because of the home-grown green onions 😍 For more breakfast ideas and recipes, check out this blog here

The next one is a full lunch, all cooked by Stephen. Because we homeschool, we can enjoy full lunches almost every day. This meal was baked salmon, rice, and cucumbers, but these are also great family cooking activities. This could be made into dinner also as a family bonding activity at home. These recipes look delicious and I love that you’re teaching Stephen such a valuable life skill. I agree, it’s not just about being able to feed yourself, but to challenge your creativity and confidence too. I started cooking in Elementary School and remember my first cookbook was a spiral-bound book from Campbell’s. Lol
Thank you Stacy I really appreciate your feedback! I am really happy to hear that you learned to cook when you were a child too. I sincerely wish that more parents were doing this but I do believe slowly but surely the tide is changing and that it is happening now 😊
This all looks delicious!! I’m glad he’s so willing to share his creations with us. I can’t get my teenage daughter (who is creative and loves to cook too) to do this.
I’m glad you all will have these memories too.
Thank you so much Crystal, much appreciated! I am so happy to hear that your daughter likes to be creative and cook too, that is so wonderful! I understand your frustration as Stephen has only recently been comfortable with me sharing his cooking and only certain ones for sure. 😊
