5+Fun Christmas Party Ideas for Kids They’ll Love
Hey, it’s that time of year again! You might have some office parties to go to, but what about the kids? Make Christmas extra special this year with some fun Christmas party ideas! Get out your notebook and read on.
Fun Christmas Party Ideas
Before I get started talking about my fun Christmas party ideas, let’s talk about basics. Are you inviting your child’s whole class or a selected few? Is it a girls only or boys only party? How long will the party be? Is it at your house or another venue? It’s best to think about these logistics first so you know how many supplies to buy and how many activities you’ll need to plan.
White elephant grab bag
Have you ever been to a white elephant party? Super fun. It can be a great way to get rid of gently used kids’ toys that yours aren’t playing with anymore and it keeps costs down. To keep it fun for all the kids, be sure to talk to the other parents about bringing gifts that kids would want, not a can of beans or a tissue box. (Just sayin’ it because I’ve seen it. No kid wants to go home with the “joke” gift.)
You can make this fun Christmas party idea even more fun by matching it up with a game. See some game ideas below.
Christmas crafts
Here are a couple of no-brainer crafts. I will add more in the coming weeks!
Make an ornament
You can make this a special part of your party by showing the kids how to do something that can hang on the tree year after year. What about something with popsicle sticks, fabric, twine, or felt? You could make a nativity, a small felted tree or little animals, twine ball, or star. You don’t have to sew, just have some glue and scissors handy.
Edible garland
Got a lot of trees in your neighborhood? Make some popcorn and string some edible garland! The kids will love decorating the trees and watching the animals come visit all winter, although you will likely see mostly squirrels and winter birds.
Christmas tea light candle holder
This might be better for the older kids but can be a great way to reuse and recycle old jelly jars. You will need small battery-operated tea lights to put inside, but these can be lovely in a window. Decorate the outside of the jar with paint or glue different colored tissue paper in a pattern or cut out shapes. Want something that looks a bit more sophisticated? Check out these snowy Mason jar candles.
Decorate cookies or build a gingerbread house
Because my kids have food allergies, making allergy free cookies and a gingerbread house each year is extra special. You can make or buy sugar cookies and have all sorts of decorations available for the kids to create their own Christmas cookie. Or, you can have some graham crackers and frosting with other decorations and make small houses. Either way, this is one of those fun Christmas party ideas that kids will love!
Games
There are so many options and adaptations here for fun Christmas party ideas. There’s a felt Christmas tree you can use to “stick the ornament on the tree” sort of like the old Pin the Tail on the Donkey game. One that you could adapt for the grab bag mentioned above is a hot potato type game. You can simply pass around a toy and when the music stops, the person who has it gets to choose from the bag .
Or, you can do something a bit more sophisticated and have a gift that is wrapped several times over. The kids unwrap as they pass it and the kid who ends up getting to the final box gets to choose from the bag. Or, the final box can have something special inside and the grab bag is handled a different way.
You can do a Christmas scavenger hunt with clues to items that you’ve pre-hidden in your home. Or, if it’s not terribly cold, try this outdoor Christmas scavenger hunt. Then, offer prizes or first dibs at the grab bag.
Other fun Christmas party ideas for kids can involve simply adapting circle games, active games (like musical chairs), team games, or even board games, depending on the size of your party. Get creative!
Giving to others
One of the best things about Christmas is the opportunity to give. Christmas can be a time of great sorrow for some people, especially deployed soldiers, widows, orphans, new immigrants, and others separated from loved ones or who simply don’t have income. Participating in Operation Christmas Child, Angel Tree, or other charities through fun Christmas party ideas for kids that show them that they can make a difference may be the most memorable thing you do this Christmas. Request that each child coming to the party bring something to donate to another child in need. Then, spend some time during the party talking about why you are doing that.
Read aloud
And the last of my fun Christmas party ideas is to gather the kids and read the ultimate Christmas story to them, the story of Christ coming to earth. Christmas gives up hope because HE. is. hope. He is hope incarnate, the Savior of the world.
